Volunteer Full Judge

Role Description and Responsibilities

Full Judges provide the specialised knowledge and practical expertise that is required for the successful running of the Australian Independent Beer Awards.  Judges are made up of industry professionals who volunteer their time and efforts for the integrity of the competition.

The role of a Judge is to:
  • Evaluate beer samples using predetermined criteria to accurately assess flavor, aroma, body, and other characteristics.
  • Document tasting results in a comprehensive and consistent manner.
  • Offer constructive feedback to entrants on to how to improve their beer.
  • Lead discussions on perceptions and sensory findings with the panel of judges.
  • Offer a wide understanding of flavours, faults and how brewing/packaging processes can affect these.
  • Apply information on styles, techniques, ingredients and up to date on trends in the beer industry. 
  • Communicate clearly with the volunteer stewards regarding pace of serving samples for judging.
  • Ensure beers are judged in a timely manner.
  • Judge each beer on its merit according to the supplied style guidelines with fairness and without bias.
  • Treat each sample as an award-winning beer unless otherwise determined by the panel after tasting.

Selection Criteria 

  1. Previous experience as an Associate Judge during 2+ competitions.
  2. Ability to evaluate beers objectively and accurately in accordance with established competition standards.
  3. Ability to work collaboratively and lead with other judges.
  4. Open-mindedness and objectivity when judging.
  5. Knowledge of beer styles, ingredients, and brewing techniques.
  6. Excellent sensory evaluation skills.
  7. Ability to think critically and objectively.

  9. Ability to clearly articulate what the key reasons and opportunities between the score/ medal and a gold are.
  10. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to provide feedback to brewers on their beers, including areas for improvement. 
  11. Willingness to learn and grow as a judge by attending additional sensory and training sessions.
