Volunteer Steward

Role Description and Responsibilities

Stewards are responsible for assisting judges during the judging process and communicating with the competition team to preserve the anonymity of entries and integrity of the competition.  

Stewards play an integral role for the competition to operate in an efficient and professional manner, it is essential that stewards are aware of the importance of the dispensing, serving, and judging process. All products are to be treated in the same manner, recognising that all entries are potential medal-winning beers.

Stewards will be guided by the Chief Steward who is the first point of call for any queries.

The role of the Steward includes, but is not limited to:

  • Ensuring all entries are dispensed in a secure area and that all products are distributed to judges as quickly as possible;
  • Maintaining a clean back-of-house environment to remove risk of slipping or injury;
  • Moving kegs of various sizes;
  • Connecting kegs to tap systems and pouring beer samples;
  • Ensuring all empty bottles and cans are disposed of safely and securely;
  • Ensuring all judges are provided with water and cheese & biscuits, replenishing when necessary;
  • Ensuring all glasses are promptly removed from the judging area when judging is completed;
  • Ensuring there are always adequate clean and dry glasses for the judging session;
  • Rotating through positions that may include using the glass washer, moving unopened bottles and cans to different locations;
  • Locating and setting aside medal-winning beers or samples otherwise marked for future use;
  • Supplying required information to the judges upon request.

Under instruction from the Chief Steward, Stewards will:

  • Pour the entries only when required for judging, with the pace of service dictated by the Table Captain. Beers must not be poured in advance as this may affect the judging process; 
  • Present the entries to the panel when, and only when, the Panel Chair or Chief Steward indicates that the panel is ready for judging;
  • Regularly monitor serving temperature;
  • Regularly monitor storage temperature.

 

Selection Criteria 

  1. Preference is provided to hospitality professionals and those currently working in beer and related industries. 
  2. Preference is given to those looking to begin their pathway to judging noting that a minimum of 2 competitions’ worth of stewarding will be required to be considered as an associate judge.
  3. Preference is given to volunteers who can attend multiple sessions during the judging process noting that they are broken up in to two shifts each day.
